After breakfast, we take the bus from our partner company Escape Travel up to the mountain village of Makrades. This is where Dimitri, Mario and Maria from Honigtal used to play before they went out into the world. At the end of the 1990s, Dimitri returned to the island and started his farm and apartment rental business near his childhood home in Agios Georgios. Mario and Maria joined him a little later - the Honigtal Farmland was born.

By the way: Only we bear this name as an original Greek family business!

Breathtaking view

After a stroll through Makrades, which is known for its spice and tea shops, we continue through the mountain village of Krini. There we take the small road to Angelokastro, which is unfortunately very busy in the high season.

It's a bit mean that we soon see Castel Sant'Angelo enthroned directly in front of us - or so it seems - at the same height, but first have to hike back down again. Only to climb up again a little later.

The fortress, which according to archaeological finds dates back to the years 700 - 800, stands all on its own and was therefore considered impregnable. It owes its illustrious name to the Venetians, who successfully defended Corfu's west coast from here between 1386 and 1797. They did a good job.

In addition to the spectacular view, the chapel on Angelokastro, which was only restored a few years ago, and ancient rock tombs are also impressive.

Path from the time of the Romans

Afterwards, it's best to treat yourself to a few Greek specialties at Spiros in the tavern below the Angelokastro. Everything here is freshly prepared by the family, and Grandma (in Greek: "Ja ja") is also hard at work at the stove.
A few starters, main courses and cold drinks later, there are two options: Either head back to Makrades and get back on the bus.

Or you can make your way to the old donkey path. This Roman-era footpath first leads through an impressive rock gate and then steadily descends into shady olive groves with magnificent sea views. The end point is the beach of Agios Georgios. There is also plenty for children to discover and marvel at on this excursion.
